RAZORCAKE MAG Feb 2014 When I was a kid growing up in the ‘70s, I loved action movies and television because they made me feel, by proxy, superhuman by just watching them. They filled me with a feeling of invincibility and raw, ragged potential; overwhelming odds overcome, opponents bested, scars left. Radioactivity’s songs make me feel that way as a stupid adult addicted to vinyl records. There’s just so much instantaneously emanating from these songs. Not only is there blasting punk jet-engine thrust, but x-ray subatomic particles colliding and syringes injecting. Head almost explodes from sheer joy. DNA gets scrambled. The entire room glows with a weird, catchy, green throbbing power coming off a mere circling black disc. Just so it’s on record—projects that involve Jeff Burke and/or Mark Ryan—Marked Men, Mind Spiders, Potential Johns—just buy them. It’s a quality of life issue (TT)

RIDE A DOVE (GER) FEB 2014 Radioactivity sounds like a typical Jeff Burke band. Don't get me wrong, I like all his bands, but no matter what's their name he plays the same kind of music again and again. This time he joins the forces with Mark Ryan (Marked Men, Mind Spiders) and two guys from Bad Sports and Wax Idols. This three track single still stands out above a lot of mediocre music, but compared with the band members other bands it's not their best material so far. The a-side delivers two solid, short and frantic poppunk gems, that find a good balance between poppy melodies and raw punk energy. With "Silent" on the b-side Radioactivity contribute this single's most memorable tune. They slow things down, add some melancholic undertones and use a guitar riff, that sounds a bit like it's stolen from a Wipers record.

MRR - MAXIMUMROCKNROLL(US) #369 FEB 2014 Can Jeff Burke write a bad song? Seriously! I have a feeling he just picks up a guitar and says to himself, “Welp, better write a perfect song before the guys come over for practice.” If you remotely like MARKED MEN, POTENTIAL JOHNS, the REDS or the NOVICE, grab this. Jeff hooks up yet again with the Howard Devoto to his Pete Shelley, the Peter Case to his Paul Collins, Mark Ryan – though this time Ryan takes bass duties. The double A-side is classic Burke buzzsaw power-pop punk while the B-side, “Silent,” goes into a slightly darker and more aggressive rhythm driven direction. Stop complaining about how you miss the MARKED MEN and get into RADIOACTIVITY. (FU)

LOFI YOUR BRAINS OUT (SPAIN) OCT 2013 Radioactivity, Marked Men’s Jeff Burke and Mark Ryan’s new band (who this time changes his guitar for a bass), combining with two members of Bad Sports, Daniel Fried and Gregory Rutherford, debuts with this 7 "released by German label ALIEN SNATCH! RECORDS. Behold the pure reincarnation of The Novice, the band Jeff formed during his stay in Japan between 2010 and 2012, releasing a 7 "on Dirtnap Records. After returning to Texas, Burke rebuilt the group changing its name and surrounding himself with friends, the right move if you ask us. With "Back To Me", giving title to this singular 3 song record, an electric hurricane rages, radiating such breakneck speed that takes you to double-check if your turntable is actually rotating at 45 rpm and not 90. The essence is the same formula used in Marked Men, sweetening punk tunes that are already quite pop, where repetition plays a key role, and where only the voice and some isolated riffs escape of a base that is as monotonous as ecstatic. In an attempt to find look-a-likes, other than their former bands, we could name Tenement, The Kidnappers, Off! or The Exploding Hearts, whose treatment of the voices closely resembles the one always applied by Burke. Without changing the tempo and in the same side, we arrive to "That Other Life", mellower and closer to power pop than its predecessor, the confirmation that Jeff continues maintaining that ability to come up with the perfect hook, to catch and keep you stuck to the speaker without blinking. Meanwhile, the B side is for "Silent", a more elaborate piece, longer than the previous (this one does exceeds 2 minutes), which tries to escape the classical pattern. The voice, more hoarse and powerful than usual, which binds to sharp and loud guitars to create a strong punk song filled with rage and fury, in contrast to the previous two. Long story short, a triumphant return reaffirming Burke as a modern punk icon, surrounded for the occasion by an amazing Dream Team. ¡¡There are less than 100 copies in coloured vinyl, so hurry up and get yours!!

MOLOKO PLUS (D) OCT 2013 Sagst du RAMONES-Punk, sag ich "schnarch!"; besteht ein Album aus einer einzigen vierzigminütigen Hook-Eskapade, fühle ich mich penetriert; ziehen die SPITS ihre schrottlahme Kutten-Show ab, suche ich das Weite. Einige wenige eigenbrötlerische Ausnahmen, die das Aufhorchen wirklich wert sind, grasen jedoch auf der stark beackerten Wiese des vier-Akkord-Intermezzos und man erschlage mich bittesehr mit einem Stein, wenn die MARKED MEN nicht die großartigste unter ihnen waren. Und gerade als man sich damit abgefunden hatte, dass sie nun Geschichte sind, anfangen wollte, ihnen ein Monument zu meißeln, trifft einen der Schlag, denn das Burke/Ryan-Gespann ist zurück und klopft dabei glücklicherweise nicht in Form einer halbgaren Reunion zaghaft an die Tür des Buzzsaw-Pop-Olymps, sondern tritt sie direkt zu Kleinholz. Die MARKED MEN machten sich rar als Jeff nach Japan ging, spielten bis ca. 2010 (?) nur sporadisch Konzerte und verschwanden irgendwann ganz von der Bildfläche. In Japan rief Jeff THE NOVICE ins Leben, deren Single auf Dirtnap fast noch presswarm ist, und führte das Projekt nach seiner Rückkehr nach Texas ohne großes Federlesen, aber mit neuem Namen, fort. Mark wurde ins Boot geholt (der es zwischenzeitlich mit seinem Recording-Projekt MIND SPIDERS auch zu zwei Alben gebracht hat) ebenso wie Daniel Fried und Greg Rutherford von den BAD SPORTS. Eine professionelle Belegschaft mit aussagekräftigen Referenzen, mag man da meinen. "RADIOACTIVITY are here to pick up where the MARKED MEN left off" wurde das Prelistening-Feature zu ihrem Album, dem ersten von zwei die in naher Zukunft auf Dirtnap erscheinen, auf Noisey betitelt; einem Titel mit viel Wahrheitsgehalt, doch trotz aller MARKED MEN-Flashbacks halten RADIOACTIVITY doch eine Vielzahl Neuerungen bereit. Ihr fiebriger Hochdruck-Gitarrensound mag der alte sein und auch das Schlagzeugspiel ist in puncto Schnörkellosigkeit und effektiver Knackigkeit dem Mike Throneberry-Trademarksound ebenbürtig (dessen unprätentiöses, direktes Spiel die MARKED MEN zu großen Teilen ausmachte: keine Klicks, kein Einzählen, keine verworrenen Fills, sondern ein full-on, grundsolider Uptempo-Angriff. Das wird viel zu selten betont.), doch die tonangebende Melange aus Melancholie und Wut wurde hier noch einmal aufgebauscht, was jedoch zu keinem introvertierten Shoegaze-Habitus führt, sondern zu einem konftontationssuchenden Haltung, die einem direkt ins Gesicht starrt, während die Songs auf durchgedrücktem Gaspedal an einem vorbeiziehen. Der Titeltrack bewegt sich im High-Octane-Modus nur zögerlich aus dem MM-Schatten, doch bereits beim zweiten Song (direkt nachfolgend; das Konzept der Doppel-A-Seite geht auf) wird die Stimmung gedrückter, zu einem Melodiehybrid aus Monotonie und Ekstase, dessen Reibung am kraftstrotzenden Upbeat-Gitarrensound einen angenehm schaudern lässt. Vertonte Raserei mit Zuckerkruste. Kein Pop-Punk, sondern PUNK-Pop, capitalized on purpose. Richtig spannend wird es aber auf der Flipside. Mit Nachpielzeit über die Zwei-Minuten-Marke hinaus pulsiert "Silent" sich düster durch ein dichtgewobenes, mitreißendes Stück - "the expression of an odd anxiety and a state of helplessness about the earthquake and nuclear disaster after years of living in Japan is undoubted part of it," wie das Label kontextualisiert. Long story short, der enthusiastische Gitarrensound ist all-dominierend, die Beats schnell, Melodien catchy, aber simpel und das Songwriting kompakt und dennoch bringen RADIOACTIVITY darüber hinaus etwas mit, auf das man nur schwer den Finger legen kann, geschweige denn benennen, was aber zu einem hohen Maß die Magie der Band ausmacht. Trotz ihres melodienschwangeren Feelgood-Sounds sind RADIOACTIVITY keine Band zur Nebenbeibeschallung, zu sehr lenken die Nuancen und Reibungen ab. Ein mitreißender Schwerkaliber; den muss man erst einmal verdauen. Auch wenn Jeff Burke einer der markantesten Songwriter in diesem Metier sein mag und man seine Handschrift in der Griffigkeit von RADIOACTIVITY deutlich wiedererkennen kann, sind sie mehr als nur ein MARKED MEN-Spinoff. Gerade touren sie mit den SUSPICIOUS BEATS u.a. auch durch Deutschland und wer die Chance hat, geht hin und erlebt die Towering Figure dieses Genres dabei, sich selbst zu übertrumpfen. Der Abschluss der Alien Snatch-Powerpop-Triologie 2013, nach den PROTOKIDS und THE #1s, sei hiermit bedingungslos empfohlen: früh den Braten riechen und später behaupten können, den Anfang von etwas Großem miterlebt zu haben. Ein Streaming des ersten ihrer beiden Longplayer, die demnächst auf Dirtnap erscheinen, lässt nämlich eben dieses vorausahnen...(MB)

LOFI YOUR BRAINS OUT (SPAIN) OCT 2013 Con "Back To Me", que da título a este singular sencillo de 3 canciones, se desata el huracán eléctrico, irradiando tal velocidad y vértigo que te lleva a revisar más de una vez que el tocadiscos realmente esté girando a 45 rpm y no a 90. La esencia es la misma fórmula utilizada en la etapa Marked Men, endulzando las melodías de un punk ya de por sí bastante pop, en el que la repetición juega un papel fundamental, y donde únicamente la voz y algunos punteos aislados escapan de una base tan monótona como extasiante.
En un intento de buscar parecidos, aparte de los grupos de los que provienen los propios miembros, podríamos nombrar a Tenement, The Kidnappers, Off! o The Exploding Hearts, cuyo tratamiento de las voces se asemeja mucho al que aplica siempre Burke. Sin cambiar el tempo y en la misma cara A, nos topamos con "That Other Life", más melosa y cercana al power-pop que su predecesora, la confirmación de que Jeff sigue manteniendo esa facilidad para dar con el gancho perfecto, para lanzar al oyente el lazo y mantenerlo pegado al altavoz sin pestañear. Mientras, la cara B es para "Silent", una pieza algo más elaborada y larga que las anteriores (ésta sí supera los 2 minutos), que intenta escapar del esquema clásico. La voz, más ronca y potente que de costumbre, que se une a unas guitarras afiladas y ruidosas para crear un tema de punk contundente que desprende rabia y furia, contrastando con los dos anteriores. En definitiva, regreso triunfal que reafirma el estatus de icono del punk moderno de Jeff Burke, rodeado para la ocasión con un Dream Team de ensueño.
