ENGLISH
ALPHAMONIC (ITALY) JAN 2005 ) BBQ is Mark Sultan's one-man band. He's from Montreal (that's Canaduh to you geography eaters), and you might remember him as a member of the Spaceshits and Les Sexareenos, and for being the boss of Sultan Records, responsible for some damn fine records. This rekker rocks 'cause he's got the live sound that really delivers!! Take any good white rocker from the 50's, say Elvis, make him neck a coupla drinks while you're spinning some Desperate R'n'R LP's for him to listen to, and have him play the music of Deke Dickerson's (r'n'r, rockabilly, frat, blues… just anything!) but without the excessive guitar technique. You'll listen to it and it'll be like a real rock and roll party, I promise! Recorded all live in three sessions by the man himself, and mixed by Edouard of Scat Rag Boosters and Andre of the Deadly Snakes. The CD version has got three bonus tracks. (Johnny)
ODYSSEY
ZINE (USA) July 2004 BBQ is
Mr. Mark Sultan from the beloved Spaceshits, and the also-beloved Les Sexareenos.
This time he's fronting (and backing) a single-minded, primitive tribute Carl
Perkins, Jerry Lee & Buddy Holly worship and backwoods good times. It's
a tremendous little disc, and you can't believe this stuff is recorded live,
while Sultan is bashing it out on every instrument simultaneously. You can't
stop playing this one because it's so perfect for every occasion. Mopping the
floor, taking a shit, drinking a beer, staring at the walls, BARBECUING. This
is perfect music for all of that. This is one of my favorites of the year so
far. (Phil Hunt )
HIGH
HEELS SLUT (Belgium) June 2004 BBQ
is the alter ego one man effort by Mark Sultan, drummer for the Sexareenos and
just as with that band you’re in for a buncha honest, rootsy R’n’R. BBQ digs
back deeply into the vaults of the 50’s and 60’s and grills his own favourite
flavour out of it. You get the distorted guitar, the pounding drums, the tambourine
and the vocals all done by the man himself at the same time, resulting in a
raw set of twelve tunes that bring you the highest possible shot of energy straight
from the living room/studio. In case you needed it here’s one more proof you
don’t need to spend months in a million $$ studio to come up with a record that
shakes the tiles off the roof.Light the charcoals!(WC)
MAXIMUM ROCK-N-ROLL (USA) #253 June 2004 BBQ is a lone canadian- Markk Sultan- who´s hopped on the one-man bandwagon that seems to gather momentum as the century progresses. It´s rock´n´roll that won´t alienate your granny or drive listeners from the sock hop-it´s got a sort of 30-watt RICHIE VALENS or BUDDY HOLLY quality. I like it/him. They guy´got talent, hitting all the high notes while strumming guiatr aind working whatever RUBE GOLDBERG-sytele contraption that bangs the drums and hits the cymbals. BBQ´s debut is a rough down´n´dirty affair that still comes off as sweet´n´innocent-these are mostly love songs written from from the vantage point of a starcrossed kid with both too much time and guitar on his hands (JH)

BBQ is a one man band of one of their members, and like the other two.. this is GREAT too!!!! Pure rock and roll baby!!! If you like 50s rock and roll... 60s garage, punk or at least the bands i mentioned before you should like this! If you only like Punk forget this! But if you are more than a simple punk and you love rock and roll on all his forms, catch this now! This one man band transformed in my fav one man band around! Better than King Louie??? It depends of your taste but i prefer this! Ah! the CD version include 3 tracks more! and now let's dance with me baby!!!!!!! rock and roooooooooooooooooooooooolllllllll!!!!! (read this like Guitar Wolf). (Raúl Cote)
BLANK
GENERATION (USA) DEC 2004 Hell, you know you should dig anything
SPACESHITS related, and this is definitely no exception. Mark Sultan takes up
the Kib Husk/BBQ persona and ponies up with such a racket you ain’t gonna believe
it’s just a one man band. But it is, and it’s better than since the Haze himself.
This fucker is a straight rock’n’roll party, much of it more reminiscent of
early SPACESHITS BFTG rock (“Threw My Girl a Party”, “Hang On”) than SEXAREENOS
frat/party sounds. You get twelve tracks (plus three bonus ones only on the
CD) of pure rock stomp, from three different recording sessions all done live.
The living room session tracks have that lo-fi charm, but the stuff done with
Edouard Larocque/Scat Rag Booster have a huge drum sound that kicks you right
in the kidney. Two covers, two tracks reprised from the 7” on Goodbye Boozy,
and all killer. Vinyl is on Sounds of Subterranea without the bonus tracks.
Too bad. Get either version at any cost, it’s top ten material all the way. (RK)
SAVAGE MAGAZINE (SWE) JAN 2004 Amazing solo-platter from the maestro behind the mic of LES SEXAREENOS and the SPACESHITS. He's gone all-solo and plays drums, guitar and sings and it's all recorded live. The vocals are fantastic and the whole record oozes ELVIS, JERRY LEE etc.. Sam Phillips would have recognized the genious of Mark Sultan. Now, this isn't retro in what the word implies, it just feels a lot like the rockabilly heroes of the fifties. The songs, the singing style and of course we all know that this is just plain old rock'n'roll (Thomas)
ANTIMATIÈRE - L´EXPLOSION (CAN) NOVEMBER 2003 You can call him Creepy, Bridge Mixture, Mark Sultan or anything you want but, the man with a no name, the guy with a thousand faces is back ! The scream behind the SPACESHITS, the drumming assault behind the SEXAREENOS has now decided to give us both (He sangs a couple of songs with The SEXAREENOS too) and he decided that drumming and singing was not enough, so he took a guitar out of the garbage and became the INCREDIBLE, THE FUCKIN GREAT BBQ !!! The ultimate one man band !!! No,in fact, BBQ isn't just a one man bad, BBQ is one of THEE GREATEST ROCK N'ROLL BAND EVER !! That's what BBQ is all about, ROCK N'ROLL ! He has always loved rock n'roll and will always ! This record is just so good I cannot believe it ! It's like listening to 50 years of rock n'roll in forty minutes ! This guys does it all: Rock n'roll, blues, R n' b, punk ! Threw a girl a party is what the SPACESHITS would have sound like if they were a one man band, 3 days is the ultimate lofi rock n'roll song (Tanx Edouard Laroque, the most lo-fi guys ever, for that). If you buy the CD, you'll have, 3 uncredited songs, so, really, vinyl is great, but, with a CD with 3 songs in addition, I'll say what the MUMMIES said on their new CD : FUCK VINYL !!! ahah !!!
"KILLER
MAN" WJDX To call BBQ just a one-man band would
be like calling his influences just rock'n roll. BBQ is the perfect mix of the
most primitive blues, rock'n roll, R&B, and rockabilly sounds lightly assaulted
with garage, soul and a punk aesthetic.
BBQ, the one-man band, is actually 'Mark', ex-singer of the legendary SPACESHITS
and singer/drummer for the world-renown SEXAREENOS. This is a man who lives
by his own rules: no home, no job, no cares - just a beat-up guitar, his wits
and a need to drink. A young man who was born parentless in the gutters of Montreal
with a bevy of women to serve his every whim. A young man who didn't need more
talent when dealing with the devil, so instead opted for a good meal - just
for kicks. An unassuming drifter who lives only for the moment, armed with the
gift of charisma and a wise man's glare. He has managed to capture the sound
of a very soulful but simple band on just his two feet, a guitar and a golden
voice. This is the real shit: no-nonsense, timeless and rollickin'. Having been
playing for less than one year, he has already electrified crowds and converted
fans all over Germany, the USA and Canada, performing with such acts as BOB
LOG III, KING KHAN, LES SEXAREENOS, The DEADLY SNAKES, The WOGGLES, The DEL-GATORS,
SCAT RAG BOOSTERS, The MYSTERY GIRLS, The COME-ONS, The SIOLEDAD BROTHERS, etc…
He has received international praise in fanzines and online, and his experience
in other bands has made fans out of legendary artists while allowing him to
play with famous bands all over the world. He has released a now sold out 7"
on Italy's 'Goodbye Boozy Records', will have a couple of songs on Sympathy
for the Record Industry's 'Sympathetic Sounds of Montreal' LP. He is scheduled
to record two more albums by year's end, and will be touring like a maniac in
such places as Europe and Brazil on a conversion quest of good times and musical
mayhem. The girls
want to kiss him. The guys want to buy him a beer. He wants to rock'n roll.
GERMAN
(cc)
Dig
It !
Coooool.
