AUTOMATICS "MURDER/SUICIDE" LP

Dude, what happened?! I remember these guys as a pop punk band that was good,
if non-descript. What’s on this heavy piece of wax is some crankin’, struttin’
punk rock that’s not too far a cry from what bands like the BRIEFS are doing
these days. I’m shocked. Fourteen tracks and not a clunker in the bunch. Definitely
a keeper. Is this another band with the same name? (Jimmy

GONE LOSER #5 Dez 2001:
US four piece THE AUTOMATICS have come out with a bunch of cool punk rock tunes
for their newest long player "Murder/Suicide". The album has quite
a few gems such as "Yeaterday" and "Killing Time", fast
numbers catchy choruses that could have come directly out of Joe Queers School
of Rock. There seems a strange balance between sappy love songs and violent
lyrics, sufficient to make you think long and hard before taking them up on
"romantic outings. alcoholic binges and hot SEX action"
UP YOURS, Nov. 2000 Belgium: The newest fulllength album by Portland nerdy kings of unadultered punk, THE AUTOMATICS. The "Murder/Suicide" lp by THE AUTOMATICS is pretty much the full-on punkiest I've heard from these folks. The basic themes are everything related to murder, killings and deadly assault, which does make quite a difference from the bands general topics of girls, booze and partying. I guess one has the be willing the view things from different perspectives. But also musicwise there's a changing of the usual formula : the band, who has an active Spider Baby in its ranks, has moved up in,to a vicious, raunchy, dynamite punching battery loaded with midtempo strollers. However the band maintains an overall snotty approach and manages to mingle their poppy hooks and melodic drive into their final outcome. 14 juiced up tracks of premier league powercharged punkR'n'Roll at its best! Comes in a neat and welldone red, orange, yellow splattermovie cover adding to the overall fun.
BLANKGENERATION SEPT 2000: The AUTOMATICS (the Portland band) have moved well beyond their pop-punk sound on their new killer LP, Murder Suicide (ALIEN SNATCH !) Pressed on what feels like three pound vinyl, these 14 songs are still loaded with deadly hooks, but they apply a generous layer of boisterous distortion and throw in a number of well-placed riffs. One more stunning LP this month that fits in well with records of the MASHERS and the SHIFTERS.
OX #40 SEPT 2000: Die AUTOMATICS sind erwachsen geworden ! Auf ihrer neuen Platt, die in gewohnt ultrafetter Vinyl-Form jetzt auf ALIEN SNATCH ! erscheint, haben sie doch deutlich von ihrem bisherigen hektischen uns superfröhlichem poppunk entfernt. Auf " Murder, Suicide" schalten sie meist einen Gang zurück uns sind im flotten Mid-Tempo unterwegs, was ich sehr begrüße. Auch, dass sie nicht mehr so bedingungslos lustig sind, tut ihnen gut. Natürlich sind hier auch ein paar klassische PopPunk-Hymnen drauf, wie beispielweise der geniale Titeltrack, aber insgesamt sind die AUTOMATICS definitiv cooler geworden. Nee, das ist ´ne absolut tofte Punkrock-Scheibe ! 8/10 (sm)
3RD GENERATION NATION #20 Oct 2000: Wow ! Eine Superscheibe !!! "ALIEN SNATCH" zieht sich ganz langsam aber sicher ´ne Menge an verdammt guten Bands an Land. Hab vorher nichts von den AUTOMATICS aus Portland gehört, ich dachte eher es wäre ne WischiWaschi-Combo, so auf billigem RAMONES-Niveau.Aber gut zu wissen, das man doch immer wieder eines besseren belehrt werden kann. Die AUTOMATICS haben das musikalische Potential um eine Scheibe mit 14 hammermäßig geilen Punk´n´Roll Smashern einzuspielen. Da bleibt es natürlich nicht aus, das jeder Song zum Hit wird. Sie reihen sich großartig in die Riege von den JOHNNIES und den DEMONICS ein. Lim. auf 748 Kopien, es gibt eine spezielle 100er Auflage auf clear orange, die aber nur per direktem Mailorder zu beziehen sind. Und, wieder auf 220g schwerem Viynl gepresst. 5/5 Stars !!!!!!! CHOKE #6 NOV 2001 : Ist da nicht jemand von den SPIDER BABIES mit dabei ? Egal, das Vergnügen beginnt hier schon beim rausholen des Vinyls, locker 220g in schwarz. Drauf ist 14x rotziger punk rock mit ein wenig bubblegum und vielen catchy hooks. Man muss aber anmerken, dass sie sich seit den alten sachen auf Mutatnt Pop schon verändert haben. Nichtsdestotrotz gibt es einen Hit auf den anderen, mit einer leicht näselnden Stimme, die4 manchmal an JEFF DAHL oder HANG-UPS erinnert.
FLYING REVOLVERBLATT #22 Aug 2001: Wieder hat ALIEN SNATCH! ein Lizendeal an Land gezogen, das heisst auch, dass diese deutsche Vinylversion wieder sehr fett daherkommt. Die AUTOMATICS aus Oregon sind so etwas wie die poppige Nebenband der SPIDER BABIES. Auf dieser Platte amcht das, was sie fabirzieren, allemal Spass. Es wird meist poppiger ´77 Punk, ohne Schnörkel und immer geradeaus, der vieleicht etwas an die frühe NOBODYS erinnert. Die Plarre hat wirklich Energie und ich kann suchen und suchen, ich werk ekein Punkt zum Murren finden.(cc)
