FASTER AND LOUDER (USA) AUG 2013 How long has it been since I reviewed an Alien Snatch release? A while! Back in the heyday of my "career", Alien Snatch was the gold standard for all record labels. When a package from Alien Snatch showed up in my mailbox, it was like Christmas morning! And while Daniel doesn't put out the sheer volume of stuff that he used to, he's still got impeccable taste. Out of Paris, Protokids are the newest addition to the Alien Snatch roster. And they've got a "classic" Alien Snatch sound for sure. Without hesitation, I'd say their 7" Geometric Boy is one of the best things the label has ever released. If you loved all those old UK and Irish bands that blurred the lines between power pop, mod, and '77 punk, you're gonna go totally nuts for Protokids! In a style that brings to mind everything from the Power Pearls comps to the classic sounds of Good Vibrations Records, Protokids power through four tracks of punky pop that could easily pass for genuine artifacts of 1979. This is probably the most Brit/Irish sounding French band I've ever heard, and clearly that's due to the group's obvious affection for greats such as Protex, The Jook, Incredible Kidda Band, and Rudi. The title track is fast-paced and super catchy, but to me the "hit" is the punchy and passionate "Please". Also great is "Teenage Bore", which splendidly marries pop melody to a punk edge. "Self Conscious Over You" is an Outcasts cover and a perfect reference point for what this band is all about. Within this genre of music, Protokids are definitely in the top tier. So if you're thoroughly convinced that today's powerpop/punk has nothing to offer, I'd urge you to give this band a chance. You could put this record in with your stack of obscure singles by the likes of the Moderns and Rousers, and most people wouldn't know the difference. They're bang-on with the style, and they really understand how to write a good pop song. And from a production/recording standpoint, this record blows the band's previous recordings out of the water. Power pop fans, this is one you will not want to miss. Your "Best of Summer 2013" mix is incomplete without "Please"! (LR)

THE GLITZ, TAXI) möchten wir Ihnen den aufstrebenden Stern im Powerpop-Orbit
an's kalte Herz legen, denn THE PROTOKIDS aus Paris werden jenes gerantiert
zum Pochen bringen, vorausgesetzt dass Sie, teuerste Damen und Herren, Ihren
Punkrock mit Melodien bevorzugen. Und melodiös ist hier synonym zum Jeansjacken-Powerpop
des MODERNS/PROTEX/KIDDA BAND-Archetyps zu verstehen, sowie zum rough-edged
und REAL KIDS-y US Teenage-Gitarrensound der Endsiebziger, serviert als cuisine
noblesse mit Mob Rock arrière-goût (SODA FRAISE, RESONANCE, CONTROLE)
– wohl bekomm's! Die "Kings Of The Hill" 7'' wurde bereits letztes
Jahr über Schwedens sympathischstes Kleinstlabel und die auch im Allgemeinen
sehr geschmackssichere Plattenschmiede Push My Buttons herausgebracht - mit
zwei Tracks ("Such A Waste" und "What Did I Expect"), die
vordergründig nach catchy US-Punkrock (THE HEAT(ER)S, THE A's, early BIG
STAR) klangen und deren 250 Copies so gut wie vergriffen sind. Ranhalten, oder
später die Haare raufen. Fast zeitgleich mit "Geometric Boy"
erschien zudem über Une Vie Pour Rien eine Split EP mit den HEADLINERS,
die von den PROTOKIDS gnadenlos an die Wand gespielt werden. Nettes Beiwerk,
doch die volle Dröhnung bekommt man hier - vier Songs, neben drei Powerpearls-soundalike
Eigenkomposition mit dem Charme eines Neo-Chiswick/Stiff Soundtracks zur Rangelei
am Autoscooter auch ein als endgültiger Beweis für ihr Stilbewusstsein
geltendes Cover der OUTCASTS ("Self-Conscious Over You"), bei dem
die Punkers steil gehen werden - big time. Und auch wenn Mitglieder bei Oi-Kapellen
wie den JANITORS unterwegs sind, fehlt hier von Szeneklüngel jede Spur.
Im Gegenteil, breiter könnte man sich kaum vernetzen und so hat man jeweils
zwei Tracks bei Garage/Trash-Tausendsassa Lo' Spider in seinen Swampland Studios
in Toulouse und mit Benjamin Daurent von den Garage-Pop-Nihilisten YUSSUF JERUSALEM
aufgenommen, sowie die Scheibe nicht etwa bei einem der zahlreichen Neo-77/Snotpunk-Labels,
sondern bei Alien Snatch, Europas (ehemals) tonangebender Stall für Bedroom-Punkrock-Prachthengste,
veröffentlicht. Schön zu sehen, dass bei denen nach einem knappen
Jahr fast vollständiger Stille auch wieder ein paar Sachen ins Rollen kommen.
Für den Sommer haben die PROTOKIDS eine Tour in der Planung; bis dahin
sollten Sie den Geldbeutel zücken, damit man später (und man erinnere
sich bittesehr an den Fall GIUDA), dann wenn das Album kommt (für dessen
antizipierte Großartigkeit diese Bewertung - ohne dabei der Brillianz
der vorliegenden Scheibe komplett gerecht zu werden - absichtlich etwas Luft
nach oben lässt), ganz abgeklärt behaupten kann, man wäre von
Beginn an dabei. Dank Moloko Plus, geschätzte Leserinnen und Leser, soll
nämlich niemand sagen können, man hätte von nichts gewusst.

KICK OUT THE JAMS (SPAIN) AUG 2013 Sorpresa de las buenas. La nueva referencia del sello Alien Snatch es un ep de la banda parisina Protokids que se manejan perfectamente entre el punk y el power pop que se hacía en el Reino Unido a finales de los 70’s. Reviven bandas como Protex, Undertones o Rousers a base de buenas canciones propias. Basta escuchar “Geometric Boy” para darse cuenta que este disco es de los que hay que tener obligatoriamente con guitarras afiladas, llenas de rock and roll y pop agridulce, con “Teenage Bore” recordamos a los añorados Cute Lepers, y con “Please” y “Self conscious over you” nos ofrecen una cara b que muchas bandas querrían tener como cara A de cualquiera de sus single. Como curiosidad la galleta simulando a la multinacional RCA pero con las iniciales de este pequeño sello y una portada digna de aparecer en esa Biblia llamada 45 Revolutions en su visión de los ep publicados entre 2010-2015.(Oscarkotj)
