AUDIO AMMUNITION (USA) JUN 2016 Lost Balloons is a project four years in the making. The origin story starts when Jeff Burke (Radioactivity, Marked Men) took his Japan sabbatical/extended stay and was asked to work on a song by Yusuke (Suspicious Beasts, Blotto). One song wasn’t enough for these two and after both moved back to the US, more songs were written and recordings were finalized. The product is this S/T LP. Both men share songwriting duties. Yes, some songs sound like their other bands, but oddly some of the experimental stuff sounds like Mind Spiders. Songs like “Back Again” and “Don’t Count On Me” are more ‘60’s influenced and more melodically driven than velocity. “Jump Ship” could fit right into a Radioactivity LP. Lost Balloons is a very good release, which isn’t a surprise to Jeff Burke fans, but don’t be expecting a carbon copy Radioactivity style release because Lost Balloons are going for the poppy at heart (ES)

RAZORCAKE Magazine #91 (USA) March 2016 The Jeff Burke hit parade rages on! This Most recent installment is a fourteen-track collaboration with Yusuke Okada (Suspicious Beasts) of dreamy, etheral, often-acoustic ´60s pop-influzenced songs. The tempo may vbe slower than the most of these two´s sonic output, but the melodies are just as crushing as ever, the songwriting crafted with precision, and the emotion all too relevant. Imagine if Love spent tenty years wreaking punk chaos on the scene before they wrote Forever Changes. Continue the ride you´ve taken with Lenguas Largas and Treasure Fleet, transcendence never felt so free. - Daryl

RAZORCAKE Magazine #91 (USA) March 2016 It would not be outlandish statement to say that I worship at the altar of Marked Men. I know I am not alone. I get excited every time I hear that a member of that band has a new project going because I know it will be quality. Lost Balloons can be added to that growing list of amazing records. A two man collaboration featuring Jeff Burke (Marked Men, Radioactivity, et cetera) and Yusuke Okada (Suspicious Beasts), my first reaction was that sonically it falls in with Mind Spiders (featuring Marked Men and Radioactivity band member Mark Ryan) more than Burke´s other projects. i like that I am not familiar with Okada´s other bands But I think I am going to have to hunt them down because I really like what he is doing here (musically, as well as all of the artwork). In a nutshell, if you´re familiar with Jeff Burke's music you know hat to expect, well-crafted songs with incredibily depressing song titles. ("I water a tree (called depression)" and "Murder Me On Stage" instantly come to mind. As you would expect, I can´t recommend this record enough. - TY Strangelohold

ibuywaytoomanyrecords.com (USA) Jan 2016 Very few things will get me to buy a record quicker than saying one of the guys from The Marked Men is in the band. Not only was The Marked Men one of my very favorite bands, but every single other band that has splintered off in their wake tends to be incredible as well. Just add the fact that the particular Marked Man on this record is Jeff Burke and there is literally no way I am not buying this, import from Germany or not. The other important factor in Lost Balloons is Yusuke Okada of Suspicious Beasts and formerly of the great, great Japanese band Blotto. Combine these two songwriting titans and you are essentially guaranteed a great record. Lost Balloons does not let down. Both Burke and Okada share the singing duties on this record, but I would say that in general the sensibilities of Burke shine through a bit more. You can certainly hear echoes of his other bands in quite a few of the songs. Chances are that if you like The Marked Men or Radioactivity, there's a pretty good chunk of this record that will make you just as happy. The remaining chunk tends to slow things down a bit and play with the texture of the songs. While most of the songs on this album tend to be a bit poppier than the Suspicious Beasts records, Okada brings an element of experimentation to the party. But don't assume catchy aspects of the songs are all Burke as when Okada was in Blotto, he knew a thing or two about creating perfect two minute punk rock hits. Needless to say, I really dig this record. If forced to choose (and I will be in a couple of weeks while making my best of the year lists), I might even say I like this album even better than the stellar Radioactivity release from earlier this year. Lost Balloons is a can't miss collaboration of two tremendous songwriters. Even as a pricey import, it's still very much worth picking up.(Tim Pop Kid)

MOLOKO PLUS January 2016 Ja, hinter LOST BALLOONS steckt Jeff Burke. Zumindest zum Teil. Zum halben, um genau zu sein. Zum anderen Teil zeichnet sich Yusuke Okada für das Songwriting und die Vocals dieses Projekts verantwortlich, dessen Mutterschiff SUSPICIOUS BEASTS bereits an dieser Stelle in all seiner Pracht Gegenstand der Debatte war. Und über eben diese Band lassen sich mehr Anhaltspunkte zum Sound der LOST BALLOONS finden, als es sich per Erwartungshaltung angesicht von Jeff Burkes Verstrickung in die Hautevolee des texanischen Sägewerk-Powerpops von MARKED MEN und RADIOACTIVITY zunächst vermuten lassen würde. Während das ganze 2011 eigentlich noch als Recording Project im Rahmen von Jeffs Aufenthalt in Japan angedacht war, wuchs daraus bald eine pflückreife Band heran. Nachdem der eine nämlich wieder in die USA zurückgekehrt ist und der andere erst dorthin umzog, wurden in Jeffs Heimstudio aus groben Song-Skizzen bald Rowdy Pop-Cracker von robuster Substanz, zumindest immer dann, wenn Yusuke die knapp 1.600 Meilen aus New York auf sich nehmen konnte. Von MARKED MEN und ihrem Vermächtnis wurde einzig die melodische Perfektion auf diese Platte hinüber gehievt, der Restsound formiert sich weitesgehend losgelöst von deren kurzatmigen, vierakkordigen Poppunk-Attacken. Auch wenn deutlich ist, dass das beneidenswerte Händchen für imposante Melodien hier angelegt worden ist, hört man auch, dass die Last der Komposition hälftig getragen wurde. Der Sound ist sehr anders als alles, was man sonst aus dem MARKED MEN-Terrain gewohnt ist, besteht aus Schichten aus rootsigem Western Twang, Blumenkinder-Psych, Country Soul und Mittsiebziger-Powerpop, die alle zu verschiedenen Intensitäten in den Sound hineinbluten und sich über das Album legen wie ein Staubmantel auf eine 45 aus einer Flohmarktkiste. LOST BALLOONS greifen mit beiden Händen ins popkulturelle Kaleidoskop und picken mit trüffelschweiniger Präzision das Beste heraus, was seit knapp fünf Jahrzehnten den Impetus für das Modell „highschool kids in a good time-band“ gibt. Dadurch ist der musikalische Kristallisationspunkt, in dem sich ihren Einflüsse zentrieren, nicht einfach auszumachen, doch es klingt so, als würden sie sich in diesem selbstgeschaffenem Register sehr wohl fühlen. Das Beharren auf stilistische Inkonsistenz zwischen Akustik-Parts auf der Gitarre und Breitband-Riffing, zwischen Orgel-Hooklines und durchtrieben introvertierten Loops, die von metronomisch linientreuem Achtelhieben auf der Hi-Hat vorangepeitscht werden, wird in diesem Fall zu einer guten Sache; und die großen Melodien, der existenzielle Kunstgriff des Burke-Trademarks, machen den Charakter dieser Platte aus und bilden einen Unterschied zum Mittelmaß ähnlich dem zwischen einem beliebigen Garage Act und einem Stapel Stax-Singles. Nach diesem Bauplan klingt das höchstgeradig organisch, die Textur aus Gesang und Instrumentierung greift einwandfrei ineinander, als wären die beiden Songwriter ganz unbedarft aneinander gereift. In der Summe ergibt das einen Premium-Sound, keine verschnarchte Kreisklasse, sondern ein Pop-Format „to write home about.“ Die Platte trieft vor wunderbar melancholischen Melodien und weinseeliger Schwermut, trägt den Soul auf der Zunge und den Punk im Herzen und ist in der verschrobenen Pop-Welt des Vaters dieser Zeilen bis dato ungeschlagener Anwärter auf den Titel der Platte des Jahres, steht also nicht nur in qualitativer Nachbarschaft zum letztjährig erschienenen „Shattered“ von REIGNING SOUND. Wie nonchalant hier der Bogen von BYRDSy Sixties-Jangle zu BIG STAR’esken Kompositionen in den staubigen Chaps von Townes Van Zandt geschlagen wird, ist fast schon skandalös. MOJOMATICS, MIDWEST BEAT oder GOODNIGHT LOVING kämen diesem Sound nahe, wäre da nicht das gewisse etwas – diese Punkrock-Patina, die sich auf der Arrangements angesammelt hat –, das dafür sorgt, dass einen diese Platte länger begleiten wird als der ganze Plunder von ausgemachter Resterampigkeit, mit dem sonst so von der Kulturindustrie en masse zugemüllt wird. I LOST BALLOONS sono il nuovo progetto di Jeff Burke, mente/voce/chitarra di Marked Men, Radioactivity, The Reds, e vero e proprio vulcano creativo della scena Americana, nonchè uno dei migliori punk-rock songwriter dell'ultimo decennio. Accantonati i Marked Men dopo quattro album, e proprio nel momento della loro consacrazione, Jeff si trasferisce a studiare e lavorare in Giappone, dove si integra subito nella scena indipendente locale. Organizza concerti, opera come punto di riferimento per gruppi stranieri in tour nel paese del sol levante, e soprattutto non smette mai di scrivere canzoni. Dalla collaborazione con l'artista Yusuke Okata, cantante/chitarrista degli eroi locali Suspicious Beasts, nascono i LOST BALLOONS: una combinazione killer di energia garage-punk e melodie power-pop. Conclusa l'esperienza giapponese, Jeff torna in Texas, dove costruisce ed apre il proprio studio di registrazione, il Cool Devices, e forma i Radioactivity, con ex membri di Marked Men e Bad Sports. Jeff tuttavia non abbandona il progetto LOST BALLOONS, e approfitta del neonato studio per completarne l'album di debutto, in uscita a fine mese su Alien Snatch Records. Per l'occasione, Jeff si riunirà alla sua compagine giapponese per un tour Europeo che vedrà anche quattro date italiane, questo week-end. I SOUSPICIOUS BEASTS, fautori di un clamoroso garage sound che deve molto a Love, Brian Jonestown Massacre e Alex Chilton, saranno infatti l'opener band per tutto il tour. Un double-bill da sogno per gli amanti del Punk-Rock tutto, ma anche per i fan di Reigning Sound, Golden Boys, e Firestarter.

KIDS AND HEROS March 2016 Lost Balloons, nové jméno na mém oblíbeném vydavatelství Alien Snatch!, za kterým se skrývá kolaborace dvou (ve svete podzemního rocku) známých tvárí, a to Jeffa Burkeho, muže známého z geniálních záležitostí Marked Men a Radioactivity, a Japonce Yusuke Okady z neméne skvelých Suspicious Beasts, což znamená, že je pri vybalování desky nac se tešit. Prusvitný vinyl se roztácí na gramofonu a kapela spouští své pojetí rocknrollu. Ten nabízí vysoce melodické kompozice zastrené zvukovým melancholickým oparem, dokreslujícím spíše chmurnejší efekt desky. Lost Balloons nabízejí jakéhosi krížence moderního amerického melodického garage punku a power popu s posmutnelým post-punkem i špetkou psychedelie, tak jako ji v 80. letech nabízela paisley underground scéna. Navíc se nejednou pristihuji, že propadám pocitu, jako bych poslouchal nejakou nahrávku z konce 60. let v její krystalické melodické cistote a prostou všeho toho zvukového balastu, jenž se nabalil na rocknroll v posledních ctyrech desítkách let, aby zakrýval kreativní impotenci mnoha interpretu, tak jako velkolepé efekty zakrývají príbehovou prázdnotu soucasných hollywoodských filmu. Waiting for Nothing je skvelý rozjezd desky, naznacující, že z tohoto alba by jednou mohla být klasika, tak jako ostatne všechny kapely, ve kterých má prsty Jeff Burke. Následující trináctka pomerne pestrých kompozic, kde treba ukolébáni poklidnou Don’t Count On Me jste náhle rozsekáni punkovou vypalovackou Jump Ship, to jen a jen potvrzuje. Lost Balloons se na podzim zastavili behem svého evropského turné i v Brne a jejich vystoupení jsem musel oželet, cehož pri poslechu desky nyní zpetne lituji, a litovat by mel každý, koho baví melodické rockové písnicky se silnou atmosférou.
